The Yorkshire Vet, 8 pm, Channel 5
It’s been running a long time but The Yorkshire Vet is still able to pull some ‘firsts’ out of the bag. Like this week’s tense encounter between David and a cow in labour whose uterus is so twisted her calf can’t get out. Visibly tense farmer George hasn’t seen anything like this in his 60 years on the farm. Will David be able to spin the calf around or is something more drastic going to be necessary?

Meanwhile, in Thirsk, a shar-pei cross called Murphy has been brought in with a growth in his mouth. ‘Bloody hell,’ says Julian. ‘I’ve never seen anything like that before. It’s like a ping pong ball but purple.’ Compared to these, Peter’s struggle to get a slightly dehydrated abandoned lamb to suckle comes as a welcome bit of light relief.

Hinckley is the home of 96-year-old Gordon, one of the few remaining veterans of the D-Day landings. What Gordon fancies at this stage in his life is a garden where he can enjoy time with his family. Sadly, Gordon’s outside space is a bit sad. To the rescue – Alan and the team, with bright ideas for a classic English country garden with raised beds, dry stone walls, roses and lavender, plus a seating space and an outdoor room. Just add tea, scones and Gordon and the picture is complete!

With few details to go on, the odds are against him, yet we’re all rooting for him during this poignant quest to find out who he really is.
