Casualty's Michael Stevenson: ‘Iain thinks he’s responsible for killing all his mates’

This Saturday, ex-soldier Iain, now a Holby City paramedic, confronts the horrors of war and his past in Afghanistan, in the first of a Casualty two-part story.

Michael Stevenson, who plays the troubled paramedic, reveals the return of Iain’s old army buddy Kenny brings up horrific memories for Iain.

“Iain and Kenny are the only survivors after their platoon were blown up in a suicide attack in Afghanistan. Iain’s the only one who knows what happened, but he can’t bring himself to talk about it.

“Kenny’s struggling too, because he can’t work out why only they survived. He went to the toilet and when he came back, all his mates had been killed."

Michael continued: “Iain can’t talk about it as he believes he’s to blame. The suicide bomber was a young Afghan boy he was training and he thinks he should have seen it coming.

“Kenny’s really cut up. He wrongly begins to think his wife and best friend are having an affair. He doesn’t realise Iain’s unable to tell him the truth because he thinks he’s responsible for killing all their mates.”
