New Casualty nurse Lee Mead: ‘My daughter Betsy thinks Lofty’s a doctor!’

This Saturday Lee Mead joins the cast of Casualty as Ben, a nurse who is squatting in Robyn and Max’s loft and earns the nickname 'Lofty', but in real life his daughter is convinced he's a doctor.

Speaking to What's on TV about his debut: “My family and a group of friends are coming over and my four-year-old daughter, Betsy, will be there as well. It will be a nice night.

“It’s quite sweet, Betsy got a little toy medical centre for Christmas with a doctor’s jacket and stethoscope. She keeps saying ‘Doctor Lofty’ and I say ‘No, he’s a nurse actually’. She’s even told her teacher at school I’m Doctor Lofty!”

But it won't be easy viewing for Lee (pictured behind the scenes on the Casualty set).

“I’ve not seen my first episode yet. I don’t enjoy watching things I’ve done because I’m so self-critical, so I usually watch it much later. But I think for my first Casualty episode it’s important to see how I come across," he said.

Lee, who amicably split with wife Denise Van Outen recently, six years after they met on Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s talent show Any Dream Will Do in 2007 - is also going to try his hand at more tweeting from @leemeadofficial, although he reckons he’s not very good at it.

“I’ve been told to tweet more – I do try! Some people are on it every five minutes. I don’t know how they do it.”
