Giles Coren and Monica Galetti are in Kenya this week at Giraffe Manor, a five-star colonial lodge near Nairobi.
The unique establishment, modelled on a 1930s Scottish hunting lodge, is also home to free-roaming giraffes that frequently poke their heads through the dining room windows.
The hotel's proprietors, Tanya and Mikey Carr-Hartley, have several safari lodges and pay rent to the local tribespeople who own the land. Monica meets warrior Jacob, who has the coveted job as a guide.
'I live between two worlds,' says Jacob, who, while wearing full tribal dress, answers his mobile.
Meanwhile, Giles is the guest of the Samburu tribe at a memorable feast, and goes on a cross-country camel ride.
