Though it tries to blend the best of Omani tradition with the sort of pampering and luxury international travellers will expect, the big sell here is the view – a phenomenal Grand Canyon-style drop of thousands of feet from your verandah or infinity pool beneath the roof of the world.

The price – up to £6,000 a night – is breathtaking, too.
