The family are pleased with their updated home, a brighter kitchen, complete with ‘modern’ gas cooker.

They still have their meat safe and a larder (no fridge) and there’s a single, dripping cold tap at the sink.

With post-war Britain still under strict rations, Lesley’s task is to cook a tasty tea with very few ingredients.

Cow heel pie is on the menu, and for breakfast… pilchards in semolina! Hurray!
