During World War Two, weakling Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is transformed into pumped-up superhero Captain America.

Evans' Steve Rogers is a plucky but puny youngster from Brooklyn chosen by scientist Stanley Tucci as the ideal candidate for his experimental serum. And the result is a strapping supersoldier.

Dubbed Captain America, Steve is consigned to morale-boosting propaganda tours, but when his best friend is captured at the front, he joins the fray, armed with his trademark shield.

With its lovingly rendered period settings and costumes, this fantasy has a delightfully nostalgic feel, but the special effects are right up to date.

Hayley Atwell shines as Rogers' British-agent love interest, while Hugo Weaving makes the most of his megalomaniac-Nazi villain role, The Red Skull.
