Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt relieve the same day again and again in this terrific sci-fi.
Cruise plays a cowardly PR expert who becomes an unwilling army grunt and ends up stuck in the same 24 hours of extraterrestrial combat battling invading alien bugs.
His smirking, shirking, clumsy wimp is initially a figure of fun, but as he repeats the same situations of training and fighting he gradually hones his skills, teaming up with Blunt's badass veteran warrior in a bid to defeat the tentacle-waving enemy.
The darkly comic early scenes are the best, but although the film becomes a more conventional action movie as it goes along, Cruise is a winner all the way, whether he's being a gung-ho hero or the butt of the joke.
