A period drama based on the life of a very unusual woman
A period drama based on the life of a very unusual woman
She’s played some striking characters in her time, and now Suranne Jones is adding another force of nature to her dazzling CV with her portrayal of real-life 19th-century lesbian landowner Anne Lister.
Suranne fell in love with the character of Anne, as she told TV Times: “There’s so much to love! It feels really modern and fresh because she’s a woman in a man’s world.
“She’s a one-off who is eccentric and flawed, but true to herself.
“Anne is funny and mean and blokeish but sensitive. She is just everything!”
With a wonderful supporting cast (including Sophie Rundle as love interest Ann Walker) and a punchy soundtrack, this fabulous period romp by Sally Wainwright follows Anne as she cuts a swathe through Yorkshire and raises eyebrows with her liaisons and uncompromising way of running her estate, Shibden Hall.
As Anne gives quick gleeful glances to camera to draw us into her colourful world, you’ll soon be swept along by her sheer chutzpah, but also her carefully hidden vulnerability.
