South Africa is the host nation and new president Nelson Mandela (a superb Freeman) sees the event as an ideal opportunity to create harmony in his apartheid-torn nation. So he calls on Damon's national rugby union captain Francois Pienaar to whip his nearly all-white team into winning shape.
An uplifting story, well-told by director Clint Eastwood, which, via a side trip to the tiny cell where Mandela was held for so many years, ends in the nail-biting clash between South Africa's underdog Springboks and the mighty juggernaut of New Zealand's All Blacks.
