As the residents of a Sydney home for unwed mothers excitedly prepare to watch the first moon landing in 1969, their own lives are stuck in an archaic era in which they pay a high price for their actions. After giving birth last week, Annie (Gracie Gilbert) finds it hard to go back to her old life without the daughter she didn’t even get to see before the baby was taken away for adoption. Meanwhile, matron Frances (Mandy McElhinney) puts Shirley's (Ella Scott Lynch) health in danger by encouraging her to wear a corset to hide her pregnancy. Luckily, caring, independent-minded midwife Joan (Jessica Marais), whose own past remains shrouded in mystery, doesn't hesitate to help Shirley.
