Fizzing with vitality, empathy and insight, this is a terrific drama about a mischievous six-year-old (Brooklyn Kimberly Prince) and her reckless mum (Bria Vinaite)

Fizzing with vitality, empathy and insight, this is a terrific drama about a mischievous six-year-old (Brooklyn Kimberly Prince) and her reckless mum (Bria Vinaite).

They are residents of a tatty Florida motel in the shadow of Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom.

Director Sean Baker conveys the playful exuberance of childhood as his rascally young heroine Moonee (Prince) and her friends get up to all manner of escapades. However, he also lets us see the heart-breaking reality of their hand-to-mouth lives.

Amid a largely untried cast, Prince is astonishingly good, as is first-time actress Vinaite (discovered by Baker on Instagram) as her floridly tattooed, feckless mother, while Willem Dafoe is warm and touching as the motel's kind-hearted manager.
