Jodie Foster is rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling who interviews imprisoned psychiatrist and cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).
She’s desperate to catch a maniac, nicknamed Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), who skins his victims alive and thinks that Lecter can help to catch him. But it’s a dangerous game…
Director Jonathan Demme keeps his inspired film version of Thomas Harris' bestseller on a nail-biting knife-edge and the stars - both of whom won Oscars - are faultless.
Hopkins manages the tricky task of being both chilling and sympathetic – he’s not just a monster, he's a witty ('I'm having an old friend for dinner!’), complex and fully rounded monster – while Foster is equally compelling. Their scenes together have an amazing intensity and crackle with electrifying tension and they light up the screen.
