Who will be the stars at this year’s Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship? Will Roger Federer make a ninth Wimbledon title?

Who will be the stars at this year’s Wimbledon?

At the time of going to press, it’s still unclear which tennis greats will be on Centre Court this year.

Andy Murray and Serena Williams are both recovering from injuries, while Novak Djokovic’s attendance is also in question.

But, despite endless column inches predicting their retirement, reigning champion Roger Federer and French Open winner Rafael Nadal are still looking on sensational form – could we be in for a repeat of their classic 2008 five-set final?

Last year Roger Federer silenced his critics by winning a record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title – more than any other man and just one behind Martina Navratilova. The winner of 20 grand slams, Roger is now 36, an age when most players are drawing their pension.

Tennis legend and BBC1 pundit John McEnroe says he’s still the one to watch.

‘He’s definitely the favourite, he’s positioned himself beautifully, and missed the French Open like last year to make sure he’s ready.

'It’s a risky strategy but he’s proved he can do it,’ adds John.

‘Roger’s is the greatest tennis story in the last 40 years – he has won three of the last six majors after not winning any for almost five years. It’s amazing.’

And will rising British star Kyle Edmund pose any threat?

‘Kyle could be a top 10 player but I don’t look at him the way I looked at Murray when he was starting,’ warns John.

‘He has made nice progress and should be proud but to make it over the finish line he must improve.’

Whatever happens, we’ll be glued to the telly for the next fortnight, with the ideal excuse to eat strawberries and cream…
