Keeping Up with the Joneses | Glamorous spies Jon Hamm & Gal Gadot take cover in suburbia

Keeping Up with the Joneses

The worlds of mid-American suburbia and international espionage collide with a bang in Keeping Up with the Joneses, a silly but engaging spy comedy whose well-cast stars strike enough comic sparks off each other to make up for a somewhat predictable script.

Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher play the story's meek cul-de-sac dwelling hero and heroine, Jeff and Karen Gaffney, thrust far out of their humdrum comfort zone on discovering that their glamorous, impossibly perfect new neighbours - Mad Men's Jon Hamm and Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot - are actually undercover spies.

You will no doubt be a jump ahead of the Gaffneys in figuring out where the story is heading, but the four leads' nimble rapport should be enough to keep you on board.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
