The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature Will Arnett as Surly Katherine Heigl as Andie

Nutty slack.

Will Arnett’s rascally squirrel Surly is back in The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature, a so-so sequel to the 2014 animated comedy adventure. Of course, the first film wasn’t great shakes but it did manage to muster a certain retro charm. This time Surly and his animal friends – including Katherine Heigl’s sobersided squirrel Andie - are out to foil their town’s evil mayor from turning their leafy home into a moneymaking amusement park. The ensuing action is breezy enough but instantly forgettable, though Jackie Chan’s vocal appearance as a bristling Chinatown mouse (‘Don’t call me cute!’) may linger a little.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
