Safe House, 9.00pm, ITV

Christopher Eccleston is gone and True Blood star Stephen Moyer leads a brand new cast as this tightly-wound, cat-and-mouse thriller returns for a second series. Stephen plays Tom Brook, a retired detective with a haunted past (is there any other kind?) who finds himself getting involved in an old case after a brutal kidnapping. Some harrowing opening scenes aside, this week’s first episode builds the tension slowly. Yet the smouldering plot is sure to catch fire in explosive fashion sooner rather than later, especially with Jason Watkins, Ashley Walters, Zoë Tapper, Sacha Parkinson and Dervla Kirwan among the supporting cast. Rating: ****

Gordon Buchanan returns for a second series of finding out what it is like to live alongside some of the world’s greatest predators. First up is a visit to tiny, remote Owarigi in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific, where the people live almost entirely from the sea. Spear fishing is the most popular way to catch your dinner – and that means free diving in shark-infested water. Cousins and expert fishermen Sosimo and Moses are tasked with teaching their Scottish visitor how to dive, shoot his spear and, most importantly, overcome his fear of sharks. ‘If you see a shark, look it in the eyes,’ instructs Sosimo to a terrified Gordon. The phrase ‘fish out of water’ comes to mind… Rating: ****

EastEnders star Lisa Hammond, aka bolshie Donna, knew very little about her paternal grandfather Harry Hammond. As she delves into Harry’s past, Lisa discovers the story of the 18 months that he spent as a prisoner of war in Germany during World War Two, and the psychological issues he faced afterwards. Meanwhile, on a lighter note, devoted townie Lisa, who detests the countryside, is hilariously put out when she discovers that she has ancestors from rural Wales! ****
