With Martin Scorsese’s enchanting children’s film Hugo currently reminding audiences of the treasured legacy of French film pioneer Georges Méliès, it’s a delight to see that London’s Ciné Lumiere is showing his hugely inventive 1902 special-effects classic A Trip to the Moon in its original colour version.
Long thought lost, the film's original colour version has been lovingly restored by Groupama Gan Foundation, Technicolor Foundation and Lobster Films and was shown to great acclaim at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Making tonight’s UK premiere screening even more of a special occasion, French electronic music duo Air, composers of the film’s new soundtrack, will be attending.

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
