Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same - what a crazy movie title eh! But it's one that gives a lot away - this is a crazy film.
A distant planet is in danger because three lesbian residents are loving too much - which is believed to be causing a hole in the ozone layer. So they're exiled to Earth to get their hearts broken in the hope that they'll stop loving so much.
Two of them attempt blind dates but end up falling for each other. The third gets involved with a bulky store worker called Jane (Lisa Haas). Meanwhile two agents are tracking the movements of the aliens.
There's a time and a place for some movies and that's certainly the case for this one.
It's in black and white; it's partially subtitled (for the alien dialogue scenes of course); the main earthling character looks stereotypically butch, as do the aliens with their bald heads; their spaceship is quite clearly an old foil Indian takeaway tray… Have I convinced you to see it yet?
I know it sounds bad, and much of this movie - directed by Madeleine Olnek - is. I really doubt you'll get through it without groaning at some point. Also, you may need to have the volume control within easy reach for the alien dialogue which is at a pitch and vibration that will really grate on those nerves - and there's far too much of it. Oh and you maybe need a cushion to hide behind when viewing the alien-earthling dance scene - which starts out quite funny but quickly becomes embarrassing and unbearable thanks to its overly ambitious length.
However, having said all that, within the right setting this film could be entertaining. For those looking for depth, there is an underlying message about lesbians being aliens and outsiders in society, although I doubt many will latch onto that. No, ultimately, it's the silliness of the story - and the ridiculousness of the alien behaviour - that has the potential to amuse.
Had I been a bit tipsy, with a group of witty friends to pull the movie apart, this could have been a hoot, and that's what I'd advise if what I've said here has made you curious.
