Angela Bassett got the role of course - a splendid performance which won her an Oscar nomination, but guess which other actresses were in the running for this 1993 film.

Actresses with a diverse mix of ages funnily enough: Halle Berry, Pam Grier, Whitney Houston, Robin Givens, Janet Jackson and Vanessa L Williams.
