George Best's forgotten luggage inspires new film

The contents of a time capsule suitcase that lay gathering dust for years have inspired a new documentary about tragic football legend George Best.

The Northern Irishman deposited the case in a secure bank vault during one of his lowest moments and it was forgotten for years after his death in 2005.

The BBC Two film Best will reveal its contents and examine what light they shed on the life and times of the man who was one of the greatest players to grace the game before alcoholism took its toll.

The film reunites film makers Dan Gordon and John Battsek who worked together on an award-winning documentary about the Hillsborough disaster.

It is part of a series of films made for the channel including a look inside the East London Mosque in Whitechapel and a film about riot-hit Tottenham in north London.

The Mosque is the work of director Robb Leech who has made two films about his step-brother, Richard Dart, a white Muslim convert, who was jailed for planning to fly to Pakistan for terrorism training.

It includes emotional scenes featuring the distraught sister of one of the three east-London schoolgirls who flew out to join Isis terrorists in Syria.

BBC Two controller Kim Shillinglaw said the channel was a 'showcase for the some of the most exciting and acclaimed documentary film-makers working in the UK'.

She said: “I’m very proud of the documentaries we are announcing today and the remarkable talent, often tackling difficult subjects, that we are able to support.”
