“It’s a credit to my wife really, to move here with a five-week old – our daughter was five weeks' old – and my son was three and that is a massive undertaking.

“I work really hard in the week and then I feel like on a Saturday morning, it’s like you’ve clicked your fingers and you’re just in the south of France and my son is outside and the sun is shining. You feel very lucky to be in a position where that is our life, for a few years, or until they sack me!”

The 37-year-old, who rose to fame as Smithy in BBC series Gavin & Stacey, is a big draw in the US. His late night series has welcomed A-listers including Tom Hanks, David Beckham, Halle Berry and Russell Crowe.

“Just in the notion of living in America, that in itself is a big life change as you could have, but yeah, all of it is very strange, how different everything is,” he added.

A discussion about his new Hollywood friends followed: “We went to dinner with Bono and his wife and Sean Penn and Charlize Theron and Colin Farrell. I remember thinking ‘OK, well, this didn’t used to happen’.”

When asked who picked up the bill, James said: “I think Sean Penn got it. You find yourself going, ‘Thanks Sean, you didn’t have to do that, I’ll get the next one’.”

James – whose chat show has a regular feature called Carpool Karaoke in which he drives around with celebrities chatting and singing – spoke about how he got Mariah Carey on board for the very first instalment back in March.

“The amazing thing about those things is that when we were asking back in January, February and even into March, no one would do it because it’s a very hard thing to understand what it is,” he revealed.

The star went on to say a woman from Mariah Carey’s record company 'got it' and showed the singer a video of James singing with George Michael in a car for Comic Relief.
