Fans of ITV thriller Liar, which starred Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd, will be delighted to hear that they can expect the second series on their screens this autumn.

Liar followed teacher Laura Nielson (played by Downton Abbey star Joanne), who claimed she’d been raped during a date with surgeon Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd).

It rapidly became one of the biggest dramas of 2017, with over six million viewers watching the dramatic finale, which appeared to end with Andrew being dead.

Now, the show’s writers, brothers Jack and Harry Williams, have revealed that the second series is likely to be on in the autumn.

“It should be out in the autumn,” Jack told TV Times. “Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd are back. We’re delighted that anyone frustrated by the cliffhanger [rapist Andrew, played by Ioan, appeared to be dead] will be rewarded for their patience. Questions are answered and the title is central.”

Harry added: “It’s a different lie. Who’s lying about what? The audience will be figuring that out…”

Ioan previously promised the magazine that the second series would be “exciting”.

The 45-year-old actor said: “I’ve sat with the writers and I don’t envy them having to work it out but they told me it is very exciting.

“Now Andrew is dead, goodness knows where they are going but they are geniuses.

“I was thrilled they thought I could play that part.”

Meanwhile, the Liar writers have been busy penning Baptiste, a spin-off from BBC hit The Missing.

The spin-off, which will be shown in February on BBC1, follows detective Julie Baptiste (played by Tchéky Karyo) as he hunts for a missing girl in Amsterdam.

Harry said: “We see Amsterdam’s different identities of beauty and seediness. That duality is a theme of the show – characters aren’t what they appear.”

Liar, starring Joanne and Ioan, is expected to return to ITV this autumn.
