Meera Syal: 'I'd love to star in a musical!'

It's fair to say that Meera Syal is an all-rounder, having done just about everything – from writing novels and penning screenplays to starring in some of the biggest shows on TV – but there's one area that she hasn't cracked yet…

The Goodness Gracious Me star, who wrote AR Rahman and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Bombay Dreams and appeared on a Comic Relief single alongside Gareth Gates, has revealed that she would like the opportunity to show off her singing skills.

“I’d love to do a musical,” she said.  “I haven’t got one of those under my belt yet. Just something classic and wonderful.”

Meera, who recently played a judge on ITV drama Broadchurch and will reunite with her Goodness Gracious Me co-stars for a TV special, has been enjoying a taste of work in the US, on new HBO show The Brink with Jack Black and Tim Robbins.

“It was a fantastic first experience of me working in America. I’ve worked in New York but I hadn’t worked in Los Angeles; I hadn’t worked on film in America before,” she said.

“It’s about really c**p CIA agents. All my scenes were with him [Jack]. He was just amazing to work with; extremely generous, really up for improvising, and very warm; had no entourage with him. Just a very regular, down-to-earth, lovely guy. I was very lucky there.”
