‘Some of this film may be seen as offensive and shouldn’t be shown to minors!!!’ Rob (Daktari Lorenz (opens in new tab)), an employee of a company in Berlin that cleans up after grisly accidents, takes advantage of his profession to indulge in his chosen hobby – the collection of body parts. Then, one day, Rob brings home a decomposing corpse, much to the delight of his necrophile girlfriend Betty (Beatrice M (opens in new tab)). There follows a twisted love triangle that can only end in bleak despair…
Back in the late-1980s, the taboo-breaking West German horror Nekromantik (opens in new tab) from newcomer Jörg Buttgereit (opens in new tab) was the film that horror hounds had to sniff out. Although it got scant release after its initial underground screenings in its native Berlin and in London, it ended up becoming a sought after find on VHS in the early 1990, while also being banned outright in many countries. Now, some 27 years later, its been exhumed, restored and released in the UK on Blu-ray and DVD.
THE ARROW RELEASE The Arrow Video (opens in new tab) limited edition (3000 copies) of Nekromantik includes the Blu-ray, DVD and CD soundtrack on three discs, and comes with a set of five exclusive postcard images, a 100-page film criticism book, and artwork by Gilles Vranckx (opens in new tab).
Included alongside the director-approved feature are two shorts Hot Love (1985, 29min) and Horror Heaven (1984, 23min). There’s also a host of archival content, galleries and music videos, and the new documentary, Morbid Fascination: The Nekromantik Legacy. Plus, there’s a newly recorded interview with Buttgereit, an introduction to the film and an audio commentary with both himself and his co-writer Franz Rodenkirchen. To top it all off, the highly-collectable surrealist Nekromantik comic has been reproduced in its entirety.
