Pete's Peek | Legendary Italian actor Franco Nero heads to London for Cine-Excess V

Because I will be in St Louis, Missouri celebrating the 100th birthday of the late veteran actor Vincent Price later this month, I will missing out on Cine-Excess, the fifth annual conference on cult films, which takes place at the Odeon Covent Garden in London from Thursday 26 May to Saturday 28 May. The star attractions will be appearances by legendary Italian star, Franco Nero and controversial cult director Ruggero Deodato.

Organised by London’s Brunel University in London, this year’s three-day academic conference will examine cult films, from the video nasties of the 1980s to today’s extreme cinema offerings, in relation to their political, historical and aesthetic contexts. Both Nero and Deodato will discuss their prolific careers in relation to this year’s theme, plus there's a rare screening on Thursday 26 May of Deodato’s controversial cult, Cannibal Holocaust, which gets a Shameless Blu-ray release later in the year.

And even though I will be hanging out with Roger Corman at the Vincentennial on the other side of the pond, I am gutted I won’t be around when Nero and Deodato sign copies of the two new lavishly illustrated books that will complement the London event – if only I could clone myself.
