Sian Gibson, Janine Duvitski and Russell Brand star in Tom Binns' new BBC1 comedy Hospital People

Filming has started on the new BBC1 comedy series, Hospital People, which will star a number of familiar faces including Sian Gibson, Janine Duvitski, Mark Williams, Russell Brand, Sally Phillips and James Fleet...

BBC1's Hospital People will follow the lives of a number of characters, all connected to fictional Brimlington Hospital in some way, many played by comedian Tom Binns, who wrote this new comedy.

There'll be guest stars galore cropping up, too. Among the hapless characters are Brimlington Hospital’s inept DJ Ivan Brackenbury (pictured above), its ambitious manger Susan Mitchell, porter and spirit medium Ian D Montfort and an over-enthusiastic chaplain, Father Kenny Mercer.

Benidorm star Janine Duvitski is among the regular cast and plays the hospital's chapel assistant Mrs Leydon. It's yet to be announced who many of the other guest cast will be playing.

The six-part comedy has been executive produced by The Office co-writer Ash Atalla, now managing director of Roughcut TV, who said: “We’re really happy about our first BBC1 series commission. Roughcut TV is all grown up and delighted to be making a show for Britain’s most prestigious channel. Hospital People is a testament to our talented team. And now we go to work to make this series the very best it can be.”

Hospital People will screen later this year and Alex Moody, Commissioning Editor, BBC Comedy says: "We could not be more excited about welcoming Tom Binns' extraordinary collection of Hospital People to BBC1."

Nicholas Cannon
TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of television so I really have found the perfect job, as I've been writing about TV shows, films and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 25 years. I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas and Tenko. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too.
