Speculation is mounting that US hit Desperate Housewives will be axed after its next series. The show, which turned stars Eva Longoria and Teri Hatcher into household names, made its debut in 2004 and was an instant hit, but has seen ratings dwindle of late. And according to an insider familiar with plans for the show's future, its makers ABC plan to make the forthcoming season the last one. The network declined to comment, but will be revealing plans for its autumn schedule at a news conference on Sunday. At its peak Desperate Housewives - which follows the lives of the women of Wisteria Lane in California - attracted 120m viewers worldwide. Others who have starred in the show include Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Kyle McLachlan and John Barrowman. However it has proven less popular recently, and has also been subject toIits own offscreen dramas, with star Nicolette Sheridan suing over her departure. Creator Marc Cherry has already announced he will not return to produce the next series, as he is focusing on other projects.
