Strictly's Kevin targets a 'graceful' American Smooth with Susanna

Strictly duo Susanna Reid and Kevin Clifton are aiming for an 'effortless and graceful' American Smooth on Saturday's show.

The pair will perform the dance to The Sunny Side of The Street, originally sung by crooning legend Tony Bennett, and Kevin told What's on TV: "We've been trying really hard to make our American Smooth look effortless and graceful. It takes an enormous amount of practice. Like always we start well, struggle and then it all comes together - hopefully! Susannah's improving all the time and she's just a joy to work with. I love encouraging her."

In between practice and rehearsals, Team Kevanna as they now call themselves, took time out to film in Grimsby, the coastal town where Kevin grew up with his dance-crazy family. His parents are former world champions Keith and Judy Clifton, who taught 30-year-old Kevin everything they know.

"On the show they always mention Grimsby," laughs Kevin, 'I'm only known as 'Kevin from Grimsby'... Most people don't even know my surname!"

While in Grimsby the pair visited Kevin's parents' studio and dad Keith gave a few pointers on their upcoming routine: "My top tips for the American Smooth are to take bigger steps, never stick your thumb out, swing legs back from your knee, be accurate with your feet and drag your feet back."

Kevin's engaged to fellow Strictly pro Karen Hauer, who is partnering Dave Myers, and he's delighted at how things are going on his first series as a Strictly pro. He admits he even made some changes to his appearance before everything kicked off...

"When I first came into the show, I shaved nearly all over - my chest, and even my armpits. James Jordan insisted I was totally smooth and bought in the razor. He said I needed to be totally smooth."

TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of television so I really have found the perfect job, as I've been writing about TV shows, films and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 25 years. I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas and Tenko. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too.
