The X Factor: Aiden Grimshaw is out!

Aiden Grimshaw has become the latest casualty of The X Factor, after losing out to Katie Waissel in a shock result. The 18-year-old - who is the second of Dannii's acts to be eliminated from the competition - was in the sing-off for the first time alongside Katie, who was facing her fourth battle for survival. After both acts had performed - Aiden sung Crowded House's Don't Dream It's Over while Katie sung Christina Aguilera's Save Me From Myself - the judges were unable to decide who to send home. Both Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole - Katie's mentor - voted to save their acts, and Simon Cowell appeared unable to make his mind up. "I like them both," he admitted before voting to save Katie. All of which left Louis Walsh with the casting vote - and in the end he opted to save Aiden. "I am going to save the person who I think has the most to give in this competition," he said of his decision. As a result the vote went to deadlock and was decided by public vote - and much to Katie's shock, it was revealed that Aiden had in fact polled the fewest number of votes from the public. Katie had been the favourite to go after last week's controversial decision in which the judges saved her over Treyc Cohen. Aiden appeared to be stunned by the result and was close to tears after it was announced. "You win some, you lose some," he told Dermot O'Leary. "My friend texted me earlier and said that there was a leak on Twitter, that I was third from bottom," he added, a rumour Dermot refused to comment on. And when asked what he planned to do next, he simply replied, "Have a beer." Meanwhile Dannii appeared at a loss to explain why he was going home. "They sing their best every week, it's obviously the people at home voting," she said. Both Aiden and Katie came in for criticism on Saturday night's show, which saw the acts performing songs by Elton John. Louis was not keen on Aiden's performance of Rocket Man, but Simon defended the teenager. "I don't think vocally it's the best you've sounded," he said, "but you have great presence." Katie also received a mixed response for her rendition of Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, with Louis criticising Cheryl for her song choice. "It was a throwaway performance," he said, "it was awful, it was wrong." Simon, however, disagreed. "Louis," he said, "you're gonna get removed from the building if you keep talking like that. In terms of sheer entertainment value, that was the best performance of the night so far." Eight acts now remain to compete in next weekend's show. Favourites Matt Cardle, Rebecca Ferguson and One Direction all sailed through to next week, joined by Mary Byrne, Paije Richardson and Cher Lloyd. Wagner also made it through on the public vote - and was booed. by the audience as he and his mentor Louis celebrated. The results show also featured a performance from Take That, singing together for the first time since Robbie Williams rejoined the band. JLS and Westlife also performed live.
