TV Times top picks for today

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Saturday 10th November

Strictly Come Dancing, 7pm, BBC1

With Blackpool only a week away, the pressure is really on and the pros will be working their celebrities incredibly hard in the training room. None of them want to go out just before the rest of the gang head off on the annual school trip to the beautiful Tower Ballroom! While the likes of Ashley and Pasha have been consistently impressive, there’s everything to play for as one slip-up at this stage could still see the fickle judges bringing out some low-scoring paddles! But which couple will be heading off with their buckets and spades and kiss-me-quick hats to the Lancashire coast, and who will be hanging up their spangly costumes for good? Rating: *****

Festival of Remembrance, 8.30pm, BBC1

The Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance is particularly special this year, because it’s broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall on the eve of the Armistice’s 100th anniversary. Performing in front of the Queen and members of the Royal Family are guests including Sheridan Smith, Sir Tom Jones and Michael Palin. The BBC continues the theme on Sunday with coverage from the Cenotaph (10am), a special Songs of Praise (1.45pm, times vary), and a service from Westminster Abbey (5.10pm). ITV pays tribute on Sunday with Britain’s Poppies (9.30pm), while Sky Greats’ weekend of classic war films includes The Great Escape and Saving Private Ryan. Rating: ****

Beck: The Thin Ice, 9pm, BBC4

When an ice-hockey coach is found murdered at the rink, the finger of suspicion points to the refugees from Iran he was teaching to play. There’s a lot of suspicion in the town, with some feeling scared and threatened by the refugees’ presence and others showing anger towards them and anyone who helps them. A newly returned Beck wants to take a cautious approach, but Steinar is bullish about focusing the investigation on the refugees, regardless of how inflammatory his actions may be. Nothing happens fast in this Swedish police drama, but that’s the point of this very watchable slow burner with a nice twist at the end. Rating: ***

More previews tomorrow.
