Hold the Sunset, 7.30pm, BBC1
It’s John Cleese’s first sitcom since Fawlty Towers, but forget Basil and Torquay – this is a gentler, more romantic comedy with fewer laughs but heaps of charm. Alison Steadman stars as Edith, a widow who has fallen in love with her neighbour, Phil (Cleese). Not content with popping round for tea, he wants them to get married and move to sunny Spain for the good life. He might just be winning her round, but who’s about to knock at the door? Edith’s grown-up son, Roger (played by the brilliant Jason Watkins), who announces he’s divorcing his wife and moving back home with a pile of washing for Mummy to sort out… Rating: ****
Call the Midwife, 8.00pm, BBC1
The marvellous medics are challenged like never before this week as they face two rare cases. First up, a Nigerian man causes panic when he goes into hiding with what he, and everyone else, fears is a deadly case of smallpox. Thankfully, lovely Reggie is back for a visit and both he and Sister Monica Joan bond with the terrified man. Meanwhile, Lucille does her best to help a pregnant woman who, due to the traumatic delivery of her first baby, now has a severe phobia of giving birth. There’s light relief, though, as busy bees Vi and Fred organise the annual Poplar Picnic, while there are smiles all round as two much-loved Nonnatus House favourites return to join in the fun…Rating: *****
Endeavour, 8.00pm, ITV
The merger with Thames Valley isn’t going well, and our favourite cops are forced to work with the robbery squad, who have been brought in to help on an enquiry into a fatal lorry hijacking. The team manage to put everyone’s backs up, especially Trewlove and even the unflappable Bright. Retro soap fans should keeps their eyes open for some fun nods to a classic motel-based saga… Rating: ****
