TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Thursday 13th September

Celebrity MasterChef, 8pm, BBC1

The heats continue with the final five stars braving the kitchen. Loose Women star Lisa Maxwell, dancer AJ Pritchard, The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades, singer (and sister of Dolly) Stella Parton and DJ Clara Amfo must survive the Mystery Box challenge, cook in a professional kitchen and whip up two perfect courses if they’re to make it through. In tomorrow’s show, after one of today’s celebs has been sent packing, the gang must complete the Pairs Challenge and mass-catering tasks before impressing 2016 champ Alexis Conran and semi-finalist Rev Richard Coles, and 2008 finalist Andi Peters. No Offence, 9pm / C4

Viv Deering and the officers of Friday Street Police Station are tackling enemies from all sides, as this Paul Abbott-penned drama returns. Viv (Joanna Scanlan) and her team are on guard at Cinderly Town Hall in Manchester as two mayoral candidates campaign for votes. On one side is incumbent liberal Kashif Hassan (Ace Bhatti) and, on the other, is local-girl-done-good Caroline McCoy (played by Mum star Lisa McGrillis). It looks like everything’s under control but the event is marred when a gunman, with connections to local far right group Albion, opens fire, leading to a shock fatality. A gripping opener that will have you on the edge of your seat! Rating: ****

Back in Time for the Factory, 8pm, BBC2

For the modern-day women who’ve volunteered to find out what it was like to work in a clothes factory in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, it is now 1973. Although the conditions haven’t moved on from 1968 – the building is still freezing cold and the seats still uncomfortable cast-iron – there have been some changes for the better. The bosses realised it no longer made economic sense to sack skilled machinists once they got married. They also tried to keep their workers happy (and therefore more productive) by organising social activities such as a slimming club with the slogan, ‘Look good for your man.’ Roll on the 80s! Rating: *****

More previews tomorrow.

Before working for What To Watch, David spent many years working for TV Times magazine, interviewing some of television's most famous stars including Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland, singer Lionel Richie and wildlife legend Sir David Attenborough.

David started out as a writer for TV Times before becoming the title's deputy features editor and then features editor. During his time on TV Times, David also helped run the annual TV Times Awards.
