TV Times top picks for today

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Wednesday 2nd May

Benidorm, 9pm, ITV

The final visit to the Solana sees a baggage-handler strike cause chaos for the Dawsons. They rush to the airport to try and get their flight home, but then strange things start to happen. Eddie sees his supposedly dead neighbour Ron Pickford (Bobby Ball), and Billy meets his idol, Frankie Goes to Hollywood singer Holly Johnson. Billy and Sheron may not make it back to Blighty for their secret 25th wedding anniversary party, but they do have another night in Benidorm with a very special guest star. Elsewhere, Sam and Joey get their wires crossed, and Joyce hears some worrying news… Rating: ***

Love in the Countryside, 9pm, BBC2

Love is in the air in this farm-fresh matchmaking show. Tonight’s first episode (episode two is available on BBC iPlayer at 10pm) sees eight rural romantics, including pig farmer Wendy, 59; Richard, 39, who wants to meet Mr Right, and cheeky Yorkshire divorcee Pete, 52, all take the dating bull by the horns! The candidates meet up with host Sara Cox to discover who has checked out their online dating profiles and to decide which would-be suitors they want to date. You can’t help wanting love to blossom for this endearing crop of singletons, especially Pete, who has his head turned by flirty Francesca! Endearing, down-to-earth and entertaining in turns. Rating: ****

Taskmaster, 9pm, Dave

Rejected by a number of TV stations when it was pitched to them by creator Alex Horne, Taskmaster was eventually picked up by Dave and became an instant hit with critics and audiences when it aired in 2015. Series six sensibly doesn’t mess with its winning formula – Greg Davies announces the tasks, Alex Horne acts as his impish sidekick, while the contestants do their best to complete what are often ridiculous challenges. Tim Vine, Asim Chaudhry, Liza Tarbuck, Alice Levine and Russell Howard are the fearless fivesome in the firing line this time. And fans of the show will also be delighted to hear that episode two lands on catch-up service UKTV Play right after episode one. Rating: ***

More previews tomorrow.
