Tracey Ullman returns to BBC with first UK series in 30 years

Tracey Ullman is heading home for a new series on BBC One almost 30 years after she upped sticks to the US.

The star is making a six-part series, The Tracey Ullman Show, where she will play different characters living in modern Britain.

Tracey, who became a huge star in the 1980s with shows including Three Of A Kind, said it was 'a privilege' to be back.

She said: “I still feel as inspired to inhabit people as I did when I was six, standing on the window sill in my mother’s bedroom, putting on a show. The BBC has changed a bit since the last time I worked here, when it was all men in bow ties who had completed National Service. Now there are a lot more women. Great ones.

“The important things haven’t changed, though. The BBC still provides an environment that allows you the freedom to create the best shows possible.”

BBC comedy controller Shane Allen said: “It’s about time the Americans gave her back. Tracey has been the missing gem in the British comedy crown for too long. Talent doesn’t come much bigger and the BBC audience is in for a huge treat.”

He also announced a one-off show with Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse looking back over their 25-year long career.

Harry joked: “Even though we are no longer on speaking terms, Paul and I are delighted to be donning masks of civility as we look back over 25 years of professional bliss.”

Impressionist Rory Bremner will host a satirical post-election special on BBC Two, while there is a new sketch show for fellow-impressionist Morgana Robinson on the same channel and a BBC Three sitcom called Witless. The show, about two women forced into witness protection, stars Him And Her actress Kerry Howard.
