The A Word, 9.00pm,BBC1
The difficulties of only seeing wife Alison via Skype or in lay-bys en route to and from Manchester are getting to Paul, and he’s still anxious about engaging with the wider autistic community. However, as he reluctantly takes Sophie and her autistic son Mark to a gig, the evening goes better than he expected, but an awkward moment with Sophie gives him even bigger worries… There’s awkwardness for Maurice, too, who’s trying his best to support Louise – whether she likes it or not – following her news. Meanwhile, as Rebecca comes by some very unwelcome information, Alison has a surprise at Eddie’s flat. Rating: *****
Motherland, 10.00pm,BBC2 (Wed, NI)
Julia’s in deep water on the day of a book launch when she takes the kids to a pool party, only to learn that parents need to get into the water, too. With her hair done and “looking like Hillary Clinton”, it’s a nightmare waiting to happen. Meanwhile, Kevin feels threatened by a new stay-at-home-dad, and Liz thinks she may have a date when she finds the wallet of a man with a ‘fit voice’. Rating: ***
The Secret Life of 5 Year Olds, 8.00pm, C4
It’s a new week in the nursery with a very excitable bunch of five-year-olds. The children are at a fascinating age, as psychologist Dr Laverne Antrobus explains: “They are going through a phase of experimentation. Trying on different identities to see which one fits.” From a general knowledge test to teamwork challenges and communication tasks, it’s another delightful insight into the busy minds of these young people. Jack and Ralphy decide to hide out from the rest of the group in the nursery wigwam, but how long before the others miss them? It’s also amazing to see how much more sophisticated this lot is, compared to the four-year-olds – what a difference a year makes! Rating: *****
