Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Royal Variety Performance, 8 pm, ITV1

This year’s Royal Variety honours the late Queen Elizabeth II at London’s Royal Albert Hall, so it could be quite an emotional occasion. It’s hosted by comedian Lee Mack and senior royals will be attending to enjoy a unique performance of the Jubilee song Sing by Gary Barlow, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and Gareth Malone. Others on stage include Ellie Goulding, Sam Ryder, George Ezra, Becky Hill and Britain’s Got Talent winner Axel Blake, plus Hollywood star Rita Wilson duets with Gregory Porter. There are also West End sequences from the casts of Cabaret and new show Newsies, while there’s comedy from Al Murray and Omid Djalili. A starry night is guaranteed. ★★★★ NC

Miriam's Dickensian Christmas, 9 pm, Channel 4

Miriam tries carol singing at a party!

Self-confessed ‘Scrooge’ Miriam Margolyes has always actively avoided anything to do with the commercialism and forced jollity of Christmas, preferring to eat sandwiches on Christmas Day. But tonight she tries to find out the true meaning of Christmas by immersing herself in the traditions that Charles Dickens introduced in his novel A Christmas Carol. There’s a traditional Victorian Christmas feast and a visit to Dickens’ beloved Great Ormond Street Hospital, while Miriam breaks with tradition (rather reluctantly) and throws her very first Yuletide party. But will she change her mind about embracing the festive season? ★★★★ HD

I Hate Suzie Too, 9 pm, Sky Max/NOW (box set)

Billie Piper in I Hate Suzie Too

Suzie Pickles is back with a bang, or to be precise, an awe-inspiring dance routine! Following on from the first series in 2020, Billie Piper reprises the role of the shamed actor whose life imploded when compromising pictures of her went viral. Last seen walking out on her marriage and discovering she was pregnant, Suzie is now attempting to claw back control and public popularity by taking part in cringe-inducing reality series Dance Crazee. Despite arming herself with a new agent and a new PR she finds her efforts constantly thwarted by her spiteful ex, Cob (Daniel Ings), who wants custody of Frank, their young son. Brilliant portrayals and a script that packs a punch. Continues until Thursday. ★★★★ TL

Best box set on TV tonight

The Flatshare, Paramount Plus

Flatshare on Paramount Plus will star Jessica Brown Findlay and Anthony Welsh.

Tiffany and Leon are flatmates, but there's nothing conventional about their living arrangements. Despite sharing the same place, they've never actually met with Tiffany having the flat from 8 pm - 8 am, and Leon having it from 8 am - 8 pm. Over time the pair learn more about each other through post-it notes and start to develop an attraction to one another, even though they've never had an in-person conversation.

Jessica Brown Findlay and Anthony Welsh are excellent in the leading roles and with all six episodes now available on Paramount Plus, it's the perfect show for binge-watching. But will Tiffany and Leon actually become an item? You'll have to watch and find out!

★★★★ LB

Best film on TV tonight

The Good Liar, 9 pm, BBC Two

Acting powerhouses Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen are sensational in this smart, twisting crime thriller. He’s a cold-eyed con-man who sees Helen Mirren’s wealthy widow as an ideal mark, cosying up to her before he can swoop in and take her for everything she has. Mirren, though, has a game of her own. To say more would be to spoil it, except to say this is gripping stuff with Nicholas Searle’s novel giving the actors plenty to work with and director Bill Condon wisely allowing them to dominate, ably supported by Russell Tovey as Mirren’s son and Jim Carter as McKellen’s partner-in-crime. ★★★★ NP
