Make Me Prime Minister, 9.15 pm, C4

An Afghan refugee, a hairdresser-turned-activist and internet sensation Jackie Weaver are among 12 members of the public on a mission to prove they have what it takes to become Britain’s ‘alternative’ Prime Minister in this engaging new series. Baroness Sayeeda Warsi and Alastair Campbell are the political heavyweights on hand to test, challenge and scrutinise the candidates’ every move as they create new policies, handle diplomatic crises and avoid domestic gaffes. With format echoes of The Apprentice, (but a refreshing absence of celebrity wannabes), the show has a serious purpose and, judging by this first helping, some highly impressive contenders.

The Great British Bake Off, season 13, 8 pm, C4

It’s Bread Week and Paul and Prue are on a roll.

Paul ("The Priest of Yeast", according to Matt!) is in his doughy element as he and Dame Prue put the bakers under pressure in Bread Week. While one poor baker admits to being "scared stiff", another is relying on their "lucky big pants" to get them through. For the Signature, they have to make sharing-sized pizzas – "Seems simple doesn’t it?" says Prue wryly/cruelly. Then for the Technical, they tackle a classic pastry, and in the Showstopper, they create a Smörgåstårta, a glorious but incredibly difficult Swedish savoury party cake, made from layers of bread. But who will feel like celebrating at the end?

Michael Palin: Into Iraq, 9 pm, Channel 5

Michael is trying to avoid climbing that big minaret.

Michael seems a calm, peace-loving kind of chap, which makes him oddly suited to a journey through a region that’s become associated with war and terrible destruction. This second episode sees him arriving in Kirkuk, where, in 1927, the Brits first found oil, a discovery that would rewrite history. After that it’s full speed ahead – well, as fast as the many checkpoints will allow – to Tikrit, the home town of Sadam Hussein. And then on to ancient Samarra, where a dizzying 52m minaret is just waiting to be climbed. Michael?!

Industry, season 2, 10.40 pm (times vary), BBC One

Is Yasmin about to run into trouble?

The racy drama set in the world of finance returns for a second series, making the hop from BBC Two to BBC One in the process. As the graduates (well, most of them) return to Pierpoint & Co, the post-Covid world is looking tough. The bank has lost money and is looking to make savings, specifically in its London office. Yasmin (Marisa Abela) seems to be thriving, but comes unstuck when she tries to mentor a new colleague, while Robert (Harry Lawtey) is floundering and Harper (Myha’la Herrold) is trying to avoid coming into the office at all…

The Yorkshire Vet, 8 pm, Channel 5

Feeding time on the farm.

Lambing is always popular on The Yorkshire Vet, and this week, on the edge of the North York Moors, Peter Wright has to deal with a ewe attempting to give birth to lambs that are all tangled up inside her. It’s not looking good, and looks even worse when Peter makes a shock discovery. Meanwhile, in what sounds like an incident from a comedy series, an angry parrot has escaped in the Thirsk surgery and Julian Norton has to find a way to catch it – again. Warning: sharp beak and claws!

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

Crossfire, BBC iPlayer

Double-barrelled Keeley Hawes!

Double-barrelled Keeley Hawes! (Image credit: BBC)

Keeley Hawes takes on dangerous masked gunmen in this intense three-part action thriller, which is so nail-biting that you may need a pillow to hide behind! She stars as mum Jo, who’s on a luxury Canary Islands holiday with her kids, husband Jason and their best friends when shots ring out by the resort’s pool, turning their world upside down. As ex-copper Jo bravely decides to take on the snipers, it transpires that she’s also hiding a terrible secret, which is set to tear the lives of her loved ones apart. The top cast also includes The A Word’s Lee Ingleby, The Bay’s Daniel Ryan and Line of Duty’s Anneika Rose, but don’t expect all their characters to survive…

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Rams, 9 pm, Film4

Sam Neill with co-star Miranda Richardson.

You might have seen the 2015 original of this left-field but heart-warming drama. The 2020 remake switches the action from the jagged crags of volcanic Iceland to the sun-baked Aussie outback, but the story – about two estranged sheep-farming brothers nursing a lifelong grudge – is the same. Sam Neill and Michael Caton play the warring brothers and both put in superb performances. Neill farms sheep in real life, so maybe it wasn’t too much of a stretch, but Caton is also excellent as his drunken reprobate brother unaware that a deadly sheep disease is about to put both brothers’ entire life’s work at risk.
