Ms. Marvel, Disney Plus
The Marvel Cinematic Universe adds another new hero to its roster with this latest series. Newcomer Iman Vellani shines (literally, at certain points) as Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old from New Jersey who’s obsessed with superheroes, Captain Marvel in particular. Most people see her as a dreamer who needs to snap out of it – even Kamala admits that "it’s not usually the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world". Then Kamala develops powers of her own and finally gets the chance to be the hero instead of the fangirl, naming herself after her idol. But will being a superhero be harder than she imagined?

The Repair Shop, 8pm, BBC One
After the royal-themed episode last week, it’s back to normal service as the talented restorers in the fix-up barn set to work on four more precious items brought in for some much-needed TLC. Among the treasures is a sweet wooden rocking motorbike, brought in by Paul and Sheree, who hope wood expert Will Kirk can work his magic on it and get this much-loved toy rocking once again for future generations to enjoy. Plus, instrument expert Pete Woods is kept busy by a worn-out cornet, which owner Hazel hopes to hear play once again.

The Great British Sewing Bee, 9pm, BBC One
It’s getting personal in the sewing room as the six remaining stitchers get their knickers in a twist during Lingerie and Sleepwear Week. The Pattern challenge is to craft a matching lace bra and knickers set, with judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young on the lookout for baggy gussets and wonky cups. After baring all with their briefs, the Transformation task is to turn a set of thermal PJs into a going-out outfit, or ‘from Nana to Rihanna’ as Patrick says. Finally, the Made to Measure is to rustle up a pair of luxury male pyjamas. Stand by your beds!

How to Catch a Cat Killer, 9pm (not Scot), ITV
Between October 2018 and June 2019, pet owners in south England were terrorised by a cat killer. Nine cats were viciously stabbed to death and seven maimed. Using behind-the-scenes footage and police interviews, tonight’s compelling documentary tells the story of how a community banded together to help catch 54-year-old security guard Steve Bouquet, who’d approached the cats and shown them affection before heartlessly killing them. Bouquet died soon after being jailed and what made him turn cat-killer remains a mystery.

Whitechapel, 9pm, DRAMA
The Gothic crime drama ran for four series from 2009 to 2013, with its launch episode getting overnight ratings of more than eight million viewers. Tonight, Drama channel is showing it from the beginning, with DI Joseph Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones), DS Ray Miles (Phil Davis) and Ripperologist Ed Buchan (Inside No. 9’s Steve Pemberton) investigating a grisly murder of a young woman in east London, which carries the hallmarks of a Jack the Ripper copycat crime.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight
The Midwich Cuckoos, season 1, Sky Box Sets/NOW
The man behind BBC One’s espionage hit The Night Manager turns his hand to sci-fi as he brings John Wyndham’s iconic 1957 sci-fi novel to the small screen. Writer David Farr has brought the tale, which sees all the women of childbearing age in a small town fall pregnant by aliens, into the modern age. The setting is now an affluent commuter town just outside of London, rather than a rural village as in the original novel and Keeley Hawes drives the story forward as Dr Susannah Zellaby, a character reimagined as a woman, which is an excellent way to tell this sinister and uniquely female horror story. Also watch out for Max Beesley as DCI Paul Kirby and Aisling Loftus as expectant mum Zoe Moran.
Best film to watch on TV tonight
Bohemian Rhapsody, 9pm, Film4
An Oscar-winning Rami Malek looks and moves the part as Freddie Mercury, the legendary frontman of rock gods Queen, in this rousing biopic chronicling the years leading up to the band’s 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium. Unashamedly corny in places, and not a little clunky in others, the movie gets things right where it matters most – capturing the electrifying excitement of the band’s music.
