Russell Brand: 'Jade didn't invent racism'
TV bigmouth Russell Brand has come to the defence of Celebrity Big Brother contestant Jade Goody. The Big Brother Big Mouth host said Jade, who caused a furore with her comments on the show, was 'silly' to be racist. But Russell, who shares the same agent as Jade, said it was now time for the public to be compassionate towards the reality TV star. Speaking at the South Bank Show Awards, he said: "If you don't want to live in a racist society then you shouldn't be racist. It's silly to be racist but similarly I hope everyone extends compassion... we're all part of the same organism. We're all culpable. We need to look at ourselves rather than blame individuals for what's cruel in society." He added: "It's terrible to bully people but she didn't invent racism or bullying. It's a cultural and social problem. We're involved in a racist war. They (C4) are just filming things that happen. We're all jointly culpable. A programme like Big Brother is so low down the lineage of what's wrong with society." Russell's comments come after Jade's publicists launched a campaign to rehabilitate their client in the eyes of the nation. He said that he expected Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara would 'receive the same senseless condemnation' that Jade has been subject to when they are booted out of the house, but said: "If you suspect that it's people just getting off on hate then that's not good." He said: "If we shot Jade in the head do you think racism will be resolved? I imagine it will continue. If you look at the life that lady has lived it answers a lot of questions. She's the child of a junkie (her father died of a heroin overdose)... she's grown up in hell."
