Anna Maxwell Martin dreams of a role in Coronation Street

Bafta-winning actress Anna Maxwell Martin has revealed she would love a part in Coronation Street - and admits she has a soft spot for the Street's Roy Cropper.

Anna admitted she hadn't been able to watch much television while filming Death Comes To Pemberley, the three-part sequel to the classic Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, but says she'd been gripped by Roy and Hayley's cancer storyline in the ITV soap.

"It's too sad!' said Anna. "I love Roy more than anything, I can't bear to think about him being in pain when Hayley dies. It will be horrendous!"

And she didn't hold back in telling actor David Neilson what she thought of his Coronation Street alter ego when she met him.

"I saw him in the theatre once and I had to squeeze past him to get to my chair, then I said: 'Sorry, I just have to say, I absolutely love you'.

"I bet he was thinking: 'Er, who are you? You're really too close to me'."

Anna, who also stars in the upcoming series of ITV's The Bletchley Circle, hopes to land a role in the ITV soap one day.

"My dream is to be in Corrie when I'm older," said the star who's won two best actress Baftas. "They develop the most amazing characters in Corrie - I'd love to play a character who's ridiculously outlandish."

Death Comes To Pemberley is shown over three nights from Boxing Day on BBC1.
