Coronation Street spoiler alert: drugs shock in New Year - and this time it’s not Kylie!

Coronation Street has confirmed that there will be a dramatic new drugs-related storyline in 2016 - but it’s not going to involve recovering drug addict Kylie Platt (Paula Lane).

This story is going to be about one character using cannabis for pain relief - and it will be Izzy Armstrong (Cherylee Houston).

Wheelchair-bound Izzy will confide in Erica Holroyd (Claire King) about the pain she is in following an accident and how she’s struggling to cope.

Izzy is going to start using cannabis for pain relief

Erica then suggests that Izzy starts smoking cannabis to ease her pain and offers to get her some.

“The show has researched this issue extensively and, while Izzy will take cannabis to try to alleviate her pain, the programme will look at all aspects of this debate and examine the legal implications and the far-reaching consequences of her actions for her family,” a Corrie insider told The Mirror.

Erica will be the one who puts Izzy on the path to drug use

“Turning to drugs is a last resort for Izzy,” adds a source close to Cherylee. “This is a big storyline and Cherylee is excited by the new twist for her character. She has started work on the scenes already.”

Kylie’s drug addiction nearly killed her marriage to David (Jack P Shepherd).

What will this do to mum Izzy? If she’s struggling, will she lose custody of son Jake to her ex, Gary Windass (Mikey North)?

Will dad Owen (Ian Puleston-Davies) return to save her - or is this the end for Izzy?

If she gets done for drug use she could lose everything - her son, her job and her freedom.

Coronation Street continues on ITV, Monday, December 21, 7.30pm.
