ITV has confirmed that Alison King will be leaving Coronation Street next year after she asked to take a break from the soap for ‘creative reasons’.

Alison, who has played tortured soul Carla Connor for nine years, has told the Corrie bosses she wants ‘to try her hand at other projects’ before returning to the cobbles.

So that suggests that Carla won’t be killed off.

‘Alison has indicated to producers that she’d like to take a sabbatical from the show for creative reasons at some point in 2016,’ says a Corrie spokesperson.

‘Before she leaves, Carla has much more drama to come. At the end of May, she’ll be central to the explosive storyline involving Tracy Barlow [Kate Ford] which sees the block of flats where Carla live go up in flames.

‘Ali’s desire to take a break from Corrie gives the writers the opportunity to come up with an enthralling exit for Carla.’

Coronation Street continues on ITV, Monday, May 4, 7.30pm.
