Corrie producers work on Maddie's exit after Amy Kelly quits the Street

Coronation Street’s Amy Kelly will be leaving the soap after just a year in her role as Maddie Heath.

The actress, who plays Sophie Webster’s (Brooke Vincent) girlfriend, said that she had chosen not to renew her contract so that she could be free to explore other roles.

She said: “I made the decision to leave because I’m young and adventurous and I want to gain more experience and explore and improve my craft. Acting is my passion and I’m excited to see where it takes me.

“I’ve had the most amazing 18 months and I’ll be sad to leave my Corrie family. It’s been like a second home, but like all young people, you eventually fly the nest.

“I can’t thank everyone enough who made this not only possible, but fantastic.”

Maddie has been known in the ITV soap for her bad behaviour and difficult family background, but has settled into life in Weatherfield with the help of Sophie and was recently a part of the minibus crash storyline.

Coronation Street executive producer Stuart Blackburn said: “Amy is a talented young actress and we wish her every success for the future.

“We are currently working on an exit storyline for Maddie which will have repercussions for Sophie and other Weatherfield residents.”

Amy will stay on screen in Coronation Street until the summer, when her contract expires.
