Kevin Kennedy told Lorraine he'd leap at the chance of returning to play Curly Watts in Corrie once again

Former Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy has admitted he would love to return to the cobbles and the character he played for 20 years.

Kevin starred as Curly Watts between 1983 and 2003 and now hopes to make a comeback after a long stretch in theatre.

He told ITV’s Lorraine: “We all grew up together so it would be nice, I would love to.

“It’s no secret I would love to go back and do some more and if that opportunity arises then brilliant.

“The irony of it is that one of the excuses for people leaving is to spend more time with their family, but I would have to go back to spend more time with mine because I’m always on the road.”

Kevin has starred in stage productions of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Chicago and We Will Rock You, and is currently on tour in The Commitments.

He said: “We are touring all over the UK so when we go up to Manchester I will go and have a cup of tea with my Coronation Street friends.”

Kevin added that fans of Corrie still talk to him about storylines he starred in, telling host Lorraine Kelly: “With Corrie you shoot something and forget about it, because you’re on to the next storyline and you might not get a reaction for four weeks when you’re walking down the street.

“It would be very churlish and arrogant of me to deny that body of work. I’m very proud of my work on Coronation Street and the stories that we did with the writers and other actors and it’s a life calendar thing – people remember a story from what was going on in their lives.”

The actor is a recovering alcoholic, telling Lorraine he has not a had a drink for 18 years, and has made a documentary about recovery.

“The disease gets press, but nobody talks about the recovery, but millions have been through the same thing I have and are in recovery and leading a happy full life,” he said.

The interview took a lighter turn when he reduced Lorraine to fits of giggles as she spotted he still had a shop security tag on the leg of his jeans.

He said: “I bought these jeans to come on the telly and then noticed this. Honest, John Lewis, I didn’t steal them! They didn’t beep when I left the shop!”
