Soap Awards winner Natalie: Abuse plot was 'intense' (VIDEO)

Natalie Gumede says filming Coronation Street's domestic abuse storyline was intense, but is pleased it helped real-life victims.

Fans of the ITV soap were gripped as Natalie's evil character Kirsty Soames emotionally and physically abused partner Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), a storyline that culminated in Kirsty being locked up for her crime.

Speaking on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards 2013, Natalie - who picked up the award for Best Villain - told whatsontv.co.uk: "It was a real challenge but I feel thrilled to have been part of the show and tell a really intense story.

"People are going through this in real life on a day to day basis and to have their story reflected back to them means it's so much more important that we get it right. We've heard that it's helped people and that can only be a good thing."

In a big night for Corrie, Natalie also won the award for best dramatic performance, Alan Halsall picked up the gong for best actor and Kirsty's Abuse of Tyrone also won best storyline.
