Dying Peggy returns to EastEnders with a smile to hide her heartbreak
Look what the milkman delivers to Albert Square! We can reveal that Peggy Mitchell (Dame Barbara Windsor) returns on the back of a milk float, taking one last look at her home ground…
In emotional scenes, due to air from May 9, Peggy will arrive to be with her family as she loses her battle against cancer.
And she does it her way…
Peggy takes one last look at Albert Square, from the back of a milk float!
Peggy knows she can’t beat her cancer and won’t pass this way again, so she hitches a ride on a milk float as it passes through Albert Square, so she can have one last, long look at the place that was her home for so many years.
The last time the local milkman made such an unusual delivery was when he dropped party animal Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) home after she had had a night on the tiles.

Peggy is much more dignified, as she perches on the back of the float, enjoying the sights and sounds of the Square.
This is the beginning of the end for Peggy…and fans should be ready for some really heartbreaking scenes.
Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins said her departure would be “one of the most heartbreaking, uplifting and epic exits an EastEnders character has ever had”.
It's a big welcome home for Peggy – but not all know she's dying
Peggy will be reunited with the whole Mitchell clan, but not all of them will immediately know that she has come home to die. Although, from our picture, it’s clear that Ronnie (Samantha Womack) knows and is struggling to hide her heartbreak as Peggy is surrounded by her loving family.
The reunion will include much-anticipated final scenes with son Grant (Ross Kemp).
Ross has said he was “wetting himself” at the prospect of playing Grant again.
Peggy will have her two sons, Grant and Phil, at her side as she dies
“Barbara is a close friend, so when I learned of the storyline it felt right for the Mitchell brothers to be reunited with their mother for the last time.”
Daughter Sam Mitchell (Danniella Westbrook) is also set to return, but whether or not she makes it back in time to see her mum before she dies remains to be seen.
Barbara, who has played Peggy on and off since 1994, made a shock return in January to tell Phil (Steve McFadden) that her cancer had returned and that she was dying.
EastEnders continues on BBC1, Monday, May 2, 8.00pm.
