There is much to make the Fogo Island Inn (off the coast of Newfoundland) remarkable – but it's the story behind it that makes this our favourite hotel in Giles Coren and Monica Galetti's series so far.

Fogo Island was built on cod fishing, and when the industry collapsed eighth-generation islander Zita couldn’t stand back and let Fogo die a slow death.

So she built her Inn, using local people and their skills in an ambitious attempt to save her home, her neighbours and her way of life.
