Dogs have been trusted and loyal companions to humans for thousands of years and there are now around 500 million on the planet that are kept as pets.

But our beloved pooches are part of a bigger and wilder animal family called the canines, which also includes foxes and wolves, as well as strange and rare breeds only found in South America, such as the Bush Dog.

This three-part documentary, presented by biologist Patrick Aryee, traces the history of the canine, and begins by revealing how the 400 breeds of domestic dogs all descend from the grey wolf and how they evolved into man’s best friend.
