On Great Australian Railway Journeys, Michael Portillo heads Down Under to investigate all things train

Great Australian Railway Journeys is Michael Portillo’s new railway adventure and it takes him to the vast country of Australia (Saturday, 8pm, see our TV Guide for full details).

His first journey is from the small town of Port Augusta in the south, all the way across the red centre to the city of Darwin in the north.

It’s an epic journey, almost 2000 miles long, so it’s not altogether surprising to discover that the line took over a century to complete.

Along the way Michael stops off in Alice Springs to learn more about the ancient Aboriginal culture and visits a kangaroo orphanage.

He then boards The Ghan – a huge train that will take him all the way to Darwin.

He arrives on the eve of Anzac Day, the national day of remembrance for all Australian and New Zealand soldiers.
